Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by a pattern of repetitive and intrusive thoughts that greatly upset the person who suffers from it because they do not allow them to focus on anything else, but also because they often go against their ethical values and / or morals.
In addition to obsessions, people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) also have repetitive patterns of behavior, compulsions that the patient recognizes as absurd but cannot avoid doing (washing their hands a thousand times a day or counting trees when walks, among other examples). The patient consumed by these thoughts and / or behaviors, suffers a lot of anxiety, can not concentrate and sees the functioning in all areas of his life greatly affected. OCD is a very debilitating disorder, more common than thought (up to 3% of the general population) affecting both men and women. Usually, treatment should combine pharmacological help with psychological support. Scientific studies confirm that, in approximately 30% of cases, pathologies such as depression or obsessive compulsive disorder do not respond to the usual treatment, at least two psychopharmaceuticals of different functioning combined with psychotherapy. In these cases we talk about Resistant Disorders and they can be treated with repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
Severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
In cases of severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), where symptoms persist despite conventional treatments, more advanced therapeutic alternatives are explored to effectively address treatment resistance. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) emerges as a promising option in this context. In the case of severe OCD, TMS is presented as a tool that seeks to positively influence neuronal regulation, offering an innovative perspective to reduce the severity of obsessive and compulsive symptoms.
Although research on the application of TMS in OCD is still developing, multiple studies show significant results in terms of symptom reduction in resistant cases. TMS is integrated as part of a broader therapeutic approach, which may include cognitive behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and other multidisciplinary approaches.
Collaboration between mental health professionals is crucial to designing personalized treatment strategies. In the case of severe OCD, the goal is not only to alleviate symptoms but also to understand and address the underlying factors that contribute to treatment resistance.
